What is a Planetarium?

A planetarium is a special immersive theater with a dome shaped ceiling and a projector that casts the image onto the interior of the dome creating a 360 degree view of the content. Planetariums were first used to educate about stars, constellations and the universe as a whole. Today planetariums are use to teach Science, Math, Engineering and technology (STEM) along with many other applications.

Planetariums Provide A Unique Learning Environment

Every planetarium creates a unique, memorable learning environment that appeals to the three main learning styles, visual, auditory and experiential. You can be immersed in the night sky and watch the different phases of the moon or planetary orbits while listening to the narration from the experts. In a planetarium students become part of the experience.

Educational Science Standards

Educational standards include a wide variety of core themes to create the most beneficial educational experience to today’s students. In a planetarium many core science standards are easily taught (crosscutting concepts, science and engineering practices and disciplinary core ideas) however, a planetarium is also an impactful environment for students to learn about geometry, math, arts and culture and many more. Many schools have begun to expand their content catalog to create a multi-disciplinary learning environment that expands well beyond the sciences.

What is a School Planetarium?

Inflatable planetariums are most commonly used by schools and museums as a unique way to effectively educate individuals in a memorable learning environment. These planetariums come in a wide variety of sizes in order to fit the needs of their uses. The most common sized inflatable planetariums are in the 6-7 meter range accommodating 45-60 second grade students. The planetariums are set up in a multi-purpose room, gymnasium or cafeteria, in about 15 minutes and are easily taken down in the same amount of time and easily stored away.

In closing, planetariums provide a unique learning environment for students that sparks curiosity in a way that a traditional classroom does not. Research is showing that students learning in a planetarium are retaining more of the information presented to them than in a traditional learning environment. While they are not a one stop shop education tool, planetariums are certainly a valuable tool that leaves lasting and impactful impressions on those who learn in them.
