2024: A Countdown of Spectacular Space Events

Mark your calendars and get ready for a year of spectacular space events in 2024. From solar eclipses to meteor showers, there is something for every astronomy enthusiast to look forward to.



  1. Annular Solar Eclipse - April 8, 2024: The first solar eclipse of the year will be an annular eclipse, which will start in Mexico and cross the United States, reaching its maximum point in Texas before crossing into Canada. Click here to see the path across North America.

  2. Partial Solar Eclipse - September 2, 2024: The second solar eclipse of the year will be a partial eclipse, visible in the Arctic, Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Central America.

  3. Total Solar Eclipse - October 25, 2024: This eclipse will be a total eclipse, visible in Chile and Argentina.

  4. Annular Solar Eclipse - December 14, 2024: The last solar eclipse of the year will be an annular eclipse, visible from the Southern Pacific Ocean and South America.

  5. Penumbral Lunar Eclipse - May 26, 2024: The first lunar eclipse of the year will be a penumbral eclipse, visible from most of North America, South America, Western Africa, and Europe.

  6. Penumbral Lunar Eclipse - November 20, 2024: The second lunar eclipse of the year will be a penumbral eclipse, visible from North America, South America, Africa, and Europe.

  7. Transit of Venus - December 11, 2024: Venus will pass directly between the Earth and the Sun, creating a silhouette of Venus on the Sun's surface. This event occurs in pairs separated by 8 years, the next pair will not occur until 2117 and 2125.

  8. Meteor Showers - Throughout the year: several meteor showers will be visible such as the Perseids in August, the Geminids in December, and the Quadrantids in January.

  9. Conjunction of Planets - Throughout the year: several times a year, two or more planets will appear close together in the sky, creating a conjunction. This can be an interesting event to observe.

  10. Supermoon - January 1st, January 31st, and December 30th: A Supermoon is when the full moon is at its closest point to Earth during its orbit, making it appear larger and brighter in the sky.
